Mounjaro and Metformin

Can you be taking both Mounjaro and Metformin at the same time?

Updated over a week ago

As with any prescription medication, it's important to be aware of the impact it can have on other treatments you are currently taking.

Metformin is most commonly used to manage type 2 diabetes. It works by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver, and the amount absorbed from the intestines into the blood stream.

As Mounjaro works by reducing your appetite and therefore your intake of calories and glucose, the two treatments combined create a risk of very low blood sugars (hypoglycaemia) which can lead to serious medical distress.

Due to the risks of hypoglycaemia, our service is not able to prescribe Mounjaro to you if you are currently taking Metformin to manage type 2 diabetes.

Your own GP can offer further guidance as to appropriate weight loss options for you.

If you are a woman using metformin to manage polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it would be possible to consider offering Mounjaro if you are able to stop using the Metformin. Please complete our free medical assessment on our home page, and our clinicians can then assess further.

It's always worth discussing your existing medical treatments with your regular GP before starting any new treatments, and our clinical team will assess your medical questionnaire and history to make sure you are suitable for the medication.
