Mounjaro, Prediabetes and Diabetes

How does Mounjaro impact prediabetes and diabetes?

Updated over a week ago

As with any prescription medication, it's important to be aware of the impact it can have on other medical conditions you may be experiencing.

Prediabetes and diabetes are chronic conditions affecting how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). Prediabetes is a precursor to diabetes where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. The main types of diabetes are Type 1, where the body doesn't produce insulin, and Type 2, where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough. Prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes are often linked to genetic factors, poor diet, lack of exercise, and obesity.

The risks associated with prediabetes and diabetes are significant. Without intervention, prediabetes often progresses to Type 2 diabetes, leading to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision problems. Early detection and lifestyle changes are crucial for preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Mounjaro, a weight loss medication, can be beneficial for individuals with prediabetes and diabetes. By promoting weight loss, Mounjaro helps improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, critical for managing and preventing diabetes. It works by reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness, making it easier to achieve and maintain a healthier weight. This weight reduction can lead to better blood sugar control and reduce the progression from prediabetes to diabetes.

If you have a diagnosis of Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, and are using treatments such as Insulin and Metformin to manage these conditions, our service is not able to prescribe Mounjaro to you.

It's always worth discussing your existing medical conditions with your regular GP before starting any new treatments, and our clinical team will assess your medical questionnaire and history to make sure you are suitable for the medication.
