Mounjaro and Sleep Apnea

How does Mounjaro impact sleep apnea?

Updated over a week ago

As with any prescription medication, it's important to be aware of the impact it can have on other medical conditions you may be experiencing.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apneas, can last for a few seconds to minutes and occur multiple times throughout the night. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is caused by the relaxation of throat muscles leading to a blocked airway. Factors such as obesity, large neck circumference, smoking, and alcohol use increase the risk of developing OSA.

The risks associated with sleep apnea are significant and include daytime fatigue, cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and increased risk of stroke. Untreated sleep apnea can also lead to complications during surgery and with certain medications. The condition often results in poor sleep quality, impacting overall health and quality of life.

Mounjaro, a weight loss medication, can help improve sleep apnea symptoms. As a weight loss aid, Mounjaro reduces appetite and increases feelings of fullness, making it easier to achieve and maintain a healthier weight. Weight loss can reduce fat deposits around the neck and decrease the pressure on the airway, thereby reducing the severity of sleep apnea symptoms.

It's always worth discussing your existing medical conditions with your regular GP before starting any new treatments, and our clinical team will assess your medical questionnaire and history to make sure you are suitable for the medication.
