Mounjaro and Warfarin
Updated over a week ago

As with any prescription medication, it's important to be aware of the impact it can have on other treatments you are currently taking.

Warfarin is a commonly prescribed anticoagulant, also known as a blood thinner. It is used to prevent blood clots, which can lead to serious conditions such as stroke, heart attack, and deep vein thrombosis. Warfarin works by inhibiting the production of certain clotting factors in the liver, thereby reducing the blood's ability to clot.

While Warfarin is effective in preventing blood clots, it carries significant risks. The most serious risk is bleeding, which can occur in various parts of the body, including the brain, gastrointestinal tract, and skin. Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor the drug’s effectiveness and adjust dosages to maintain the desired level of anticoagulation. Other side effects may include interactions with foods rich in vitamin K and other medications, which can affect Warfarin’s efficacy.

Mounjaro, a weight loss medication, can interact with Warfarin. As a weight loss aid, Mounjaro helps reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, promoting weight reduction. Significant weight loss can alter the body’s metabolism and the distribution of medications, potentially affecting Warfarin levels.

Due to the significant medical risks that this creates, our service is not able to prescribe Mounjaro to anyone currently taking Warfarin.

Your own GP can offer further guidance as to appropriate weight loss options for you.
