Mounjaro and Gallbladder issues

How does Mounjaro impact Gallbladder issues?

Updated over a week ago

As with any prescription medication, it's important to be aware of the impact it can have on other medical conditions you may be experiencing.

Gallbladder issues, such as gallstones and inflammation, are common problems that affect the small organ responsible for storing bile. Gallstones form when substances in the bile, such as cholesterol or bilirubin, harden into pieces that can block the bile ducts. Factors contributing to gallbladder issues include obesity, a high-fat diet, rapid weight loss, and genetics. Women, people over 40, and those with a family history of gallstones are at a higher risk.

The risks associated with gallbladder issues can be serious. Gallstones can cause severe pain, infection, and complications like pancreatitis or bile duct obstruction. In some cases, chronic gallbladder inflammation can lead to gallbladder cancer. Symptoms of gallbladder problems include sudden and intense pain in the upper right abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

Mounjaro, a weight loss medication, can help improve gallbladder health by promoting gradual and sustained weight loss. Rapid weight loss is a known risk factor for gallstones, but Mounjaro works by reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness, making it easier to achieve a steady and healthy weight loss. This approach can lower the risk of gallstone formation and improve overall gallbladder function.

If you have had previous history of Gallstones (and still have your gallbladder) or Diverticulitis, our service will not be able to prescribe Mounjaro to you. We recommend discussing weight loss options with your regular GP.

It's always worth discussing your existing medical conditions with your regular GP before starting any new treatments, and our clinical team will assess your medical questionnaire and history to make sure you are suitable for the medication.
