Mounjaro and other GLP-1 weight loss medications can cause a number of common side effects, such as constipation.
β
Some patients will experience this side effect when starting their treatment, and will find it fades usually after a few days. As you progress through the dosages, you may also find you experience this side effect when you increase your dosage for the first time as well.
Whilst uncomfortable, there is a number of things that you can do to reduce and manage the symptoms being experienced:
Change to a high fibre diet
Increasing the amount of fibre in your diet will help the digestive process, and prevent constipation from occurring. The NHS offer a clear guide on how to do this in your day to day meals - https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/digestive-health/how-to-get-more-fibre-into-your-diet/
Try over the counter treatments
There are over the counter medications that will help manage the symptoms of constipation and help your body recover:
Lactulose- osmotic laxative (pumps more water into the bowels)
Senna tablets- stimulant laxative (stimulates bowel movements)
